Why is pineapple in German Ananas? Where did the word come from?

This sounds like a weird word to me and it's the only word for pineapples but since I've long adapted to German now as my 2nd language rather than Spanish, I guess I'll have to accept it. It even sounds like it rhymes with another fruit name Bananas or Bananes, depending on the plural for Banane in German. If we have a word in German, why not have it in English? At least I would've already learned about it by now.
