Is it possible to work immediately the following day after having your wisdom teeth pulled?

What the heck is wrong with my brother's boss?! He had just had his wisdom teeth (mind you, teeth, not tooth, plural) removed. And his boss wants him to come back to work immediately after the extraction! What the heck?! He threatened to fire him if he didn't!
